Daniel Antunes Pinheiro (Beira, 1980)

Multidisciplinary artist, whose practice centres on experimental photography, with a particular attention on cameraless processes. His work investigates the ontology of the photographic image, namely by dismantling the apparatus that traditionally frames and legitimises it. Through this deliberate undoing, he turns the medium back onto itself, staging a sustained act of self-examination and self-reflection in which photography is “contaminated” by border territories, like drawing, sound, and sculpture.
Daniel holds a PhD in Fine Arts and lectures at Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon since 2010. He presented solo exhibitions at Ascensor, Lisbon, with Redundância Cíclica (2021); at the Museu das Artes de Sintra – MU.SA with Mapa para um lugar algures (2017); and at the Lisbon Photographic Archive with 00/00/00 (2012). He also showcased in numerous group exhibitions since 2005. Selected works include Sem Formato, Prova II (2014) at the Museu da Carris gallery (Lisbon); Sobre a Memória e o Arquivo (2014) at MuMA – Museu Metropolitano de Arte de Curitiba (Brazil); Imagem entre Imagens (2013) at the Lisbon Photographic Archive; and Em Diferentes Escalas (2008) at Espaço Avenida.
Between 2018 and 2022, Daniel co-organised Ascensor exhibition programme at Associação Goela, Lisbon, an artists association and exhbition space he co-founded in 2013. He lives and works between Lisbon and Montemor-o-Novo.
